In the market of automotive performance, enthusiasts are always on the lookout for that extra edge. Whether it’s squeezing out more horsepower, achieving better torque, or simply ensuring the longevity of their engines, every detail matters. Since the 1980s, the Fluidampr viscous damper has been providing vehicle owners with high-quality harmonic balancers. The damper plays a crucial role in stabilizing engine vibrations, protecting vital components, and maximizing power delivery. We reached out to Brian from Fluidampr to learn about them and why they’re a beneficial addition to your rig.

To begin, we asked Brian to explain the purpose of a Fluidampr torsional vibration damper. He responded,

“The purpose of a Fluidampr torsional vibration damper is to control the harmful end-to-end twisting and rebounding motion of the crankshaft caused by combustion. Controlling destructive torsional vibration reduces wear on critical engine components and unleashes lost torque and horsepower.”

These dampers are constructed with high-quality, long-lasting viscous silicone and precision CNC machined steel components that are computer balanced. Whether you’re looking to add more power to your Ford Powerstroke, Chevy/GMC Duramax, or Dodge Ram diesel, or simply want to ensure the longevity of your engine, they have you covered.

Why Fluidampr?

When it comes to dependability, Fluidampr is a top choice for many automotive enthusiasts looking to address high performance and engine durability with a viscous damper, especially when power add-ons are installed. Stock engine dampers can be overworked by performance upgrades, leading to destructive engine harmonics. Fluidampr provides the necessary protection to keep your engine running smoothly. When asked about the difference between the stock balancer and Fluidampr balancers, Brian said,

“Stock elastomer harmonic balancers are a wear item designed for daily driving. They are tuned for a narrow rpm range for worse case noise, vibration, and harshness (NVH). If you add any performance modifications, you’ll accelerate the wear of the stock unit. An easy DIY inspection is needed to check a stock elastomer damper rubber ring for signs of cracking and bulging. If found, upgrading to a Fluidampr is highly recommended. Adding performance components can also create an out-of-tune condition for what the stock damper is designed for. A Fluidampr performance damper self-tunes in real time to the harmonics and are designed to last the life of the engine.”

Trusted by professional engine builders, DIYers, and engine and major OEMs (Original Equipment Manufacturer), Fluidampr products are known for their reliability. With broad protection across the entire RPM range, every performance damper can accommodate future engine modifications without the need for re-tuning. By installing a performance damper early in your engine build, you can create a durable foundation for peak engine performance. Reduce wear on critical parts, lower the risk of crankshaft failure, improve engine timing, and unleash lost torque and horsepower. Proudly made in the United States, Fluidampr products are constructed using high-quality materials and advanced manufacturing techniques to ensure you are getting a product that you and your engine can depend on. It’s no wonder why Fluidampr has an extensive list of satisfied customers.1

Understanding Engine Harmonics:

It’s essential to grasp the concept of engine harmonics. Engines generate a symphony of vibrations as they operate. These vibrations, often termed harmonics, can have detrimental effects on engine performance and longevity if left unchecked. They can lead to premature wear on components such as crankshafts, bearings, and even the engine block itself. Additionally, they can rob the engine of power by causing fluctuations in torque delivery.2

Enter Fluidampr:

Fluidampr steps in as the ultimate solution to combat these harmful vibrations. Unlike traditional harmonic balancers, which utilize rubber or elastomer materials to dampen vibrations, Fluidampr employs a unique design based on viscous fluid technology. At its core lies a precisely engineered inertia ring surrounded by a high-viscosity silicone fluid within a sealed housing.

How It Works:

The magic of Fluidampr lies in its ability to dissipate vibrations across a broader frequency range compared to conventional harmonic balancers. As engine speed fluctuates, the inertia ring inside the Fluidampr unit rotates within the viscous silicone fluid. This motion generates a shearing force, effectively converting the engine’s vibrational energy into heat. As a result, harmful harmonics are neutralized, and the engine operates smoother and more efficiently.3

Fluidampr Benefits:

The advantages of integrating a Fluidampr into an engine setup are twofold. Firstly, it provides unparalleled protection against torsional vibrations throughout the entire RPM range, safeguarding critical engine components from premature wear and failure. Secondly, by maintaining consistent crankshaft rotation, Fluidampr ensures optimal power delivery and throttle response, especially in high-performance applications. Moreover, its maintenance-free design and robust construction make it a reliable long-term investment for enthusiasts and professionals alike.

Brian believes all diesel owners can benefit from upgrading to a Fluidampr damper. He stated,

“From street to competition, all applications benefit from upgrading to a Fluidampr performance damper. If you simply want a smoother ride and a one-time replacement to your daily driver or tow rig, then Fluidampr is an ideal upgrade. For street performance to professional competition, upgrading to a Fluidampr performance damper is a fundamental component for greater engine durability. By controlling destructive torsional vibration, it will also help you get the most out of your other power adding performance modifications.”

Performance Series Damper

Diesel Performance Series:

The Diesel Performance Series provides long-lasting superior performance for your engine. It is suitable for stock, work, and competition-built trucks, reducing wear on main bearings and other vital engine components. This results in more precise valvetrain operation, optimal engine protection at all RPMs, and a reduced risk of crankshaft failure.

This damper automatically adjusts to your modifications, offering optimal damping at peak levels and a wide changing frequency range. The precision CNC machined, and computer-balanced components guarantee that the Fluidampr does not require rebuilding or tuning. Furthermore, the design of this damper has been revised for easier maintenance, eliminating the need to remove the damper when changing the serpentine belt.

Competition Diesel Series Damper

Competition Diesel Series Damper:

The Competition Diesel Series Damper is designed for diesel owners that need to protect their engine from the rigors and stress of competition. Whether you are sled pulling or racing, you need to make sure that your engine can tolerate the high torque and horsepower levels. This damper is specially designed to reduce the heavy wear on main bearings and other vital engine components found in competition settings. The competition diesel series damper shares the same features as the Performance Series with the increased strength and durability needed for heavy-duty applications. When asked about the Competition Diesel Series, Brian had this to say,

“Fluidampr Competition Series dampers are for professional diesel motorsports pullers and drag racers. They are built more robust with added damping weight and do not contain an accessory drive pulley.”

High Strength Damper Bolt Kit

High Strength Damper Bolt Kit:

The High Strength Damper Bolt Kit is designed for proper installation and to prevent the damper from coming loose. Each kit includes heat-treated high-strength bolts and a diamond-impregnated friction washer. Some kits also include a torque plate. These bolt kits are rated for up to 750 horsepower and 1,250 torque, providing assurance when installing a damper on a high output diesel engine. When asked if a High-Strength Bolt Kit should be used to install a Fluidampr damper, Brian said,

‘Yes. A Fluidampr high strength bolt kit, including friction washer is recommended for every application. The friction washer should also be replaced each time the damper is removed.”
